In Path of Exile, the most important factor is the option available to players in the gameplay. Types of Defense:
● Life: Stack life, live life
● Energy Shield: 2nd type of "HP", recharges (more or less) passively, easier to stack, harder to regenerate through normal mean.
● Evasion: allows you to "evade" attacks, has some sort of internal diminishing return mechanism that makes you eventually unable to consecutively evade
● Armour: Weird as fuck, mitigates physical damage, but can only mitigate so much per hit even if you stack so much armour.
● Resistances: Elemental and Chaos, simply mitigates those type of damage by the %. Has maximum cap which can be increased with certain items. uncapped res are easily obtainable, should be at or higher than maximum. Increasing Maximum Resistances are harder to do, can be over 100%.
● Dodge and Block: Chance to completely negates damage, does not have internal diminishing return mechanism allowing you to consecutively negate damage, generally harder to stack. Applies separately to attacks and spell damages.
● Mind over Matter: Keystone nodes and certain PoE items for trade, allows mana to mitigate portion of damage before health. Does not apply to Energy shield.
● CI: makes you immune to chaos damage at the cost of your maximum HP being 1.
● Physical Mitigations: Additive, mitigates physical damage by the %, scarce but can be stacked up to extreme, 90% cap.
● Avoidances: gives chance to avoid the specific damage sources, not as available as other means of defense.
